The Impact of Smart Meters on Firm Performance: Experimental Evidence from Ethiopia
A randomised evaluation of smart meters, electricity reliability, utility revenue, and SME performance in Ethiopia.
Ongoing randomised experiment · Ethiopia
Project
Reliable electricity is a major constraint on firm performance in Ethiopia. In collaboration with the Ethiopian Electricity Utility, this project evaluates smart-meter installation among 1,583 firms in Addis Ababa and Sheger City.
The experiment measures effects on billing accuracy, payment, theft, outages, utility revenue, generator use, and firm performance. It will provide some of the first causal evidence on smart meters for businesses in a low-income economy while informing a large planned rollout by the utility.
